Back at the cabin Christian awaited her. The man who believed himself to be her soul mate. The man she could spend the rest of her life with if she could only change her entire belief structure and thought processes.
Halfway back to the cabin, as the sun began to set and the shadows of night spread long fingers through the trees, D.J. called out to Josie. She waited, straining her ears for the trill of Christmas-bell laughter, straining her eyes against the darkness, searching the treetops for a glimpse of bare feet. But the angel didn't answer or appear. Had Josie returned to her heavenly reward, her mission complete?
D.J. hoped so. Josie deserved eternal happiness. D.J. just wished she'd been given the chance to say good-bye.

Reaching the edge of the trees, she stopped short and frowned in the direction of the cabin. Though night approached, no lights blazed within. Perhaps McCall had fallen asleep once she'd left and now slept on undisturbed. Perhaps, but she didn't think so. Something wasn't right here. D.J. could smell it.
She reached for her gun, then swore when her hand encountered the small of her back and nothing more. Her service weapon lay on the coffee table in the living room, useless to her and available to anyone inside.
